PRIVATE HOUSE IN SETOMAA
The log house, set on the edge of a lake, with expansive glass windows, unfolds as a well-balanced dialogue between interior and exterior. The view of the lake and the untouched nature of Setomaa is not merely an added value here, but an organic part of the interior itself – the shifting light and the rhythm of the changing seasons create a new atmosphere every day. Light-toned softwood, covering both walls and ceilings, forms a calm backdrop where light is free to play.
The client’s main wish was a home where wood and light tones would dominate – a space that feels cozy and close to nature, yet at the same time contemporary. Alongside wood, other natural materials have been used: stone, texture-rich composite surfaces and natural textiles. The colour palette seems to be borrowed from the surrounding landscape – misty greys, soft beiges and various shades of white combined with wood tones result in an interior that breathes in a calm, meditative rhythm in harmony with nature.
The heart of the home opens into a living area with soaring ceilings – reaching up to six metres – and large window surfaces that bring together the lounge, dining area and kitchen. While the zones form a cohesive whole, each remains perceptually distinct. A round dining table softens the architectural linearity, while muted tones in the textiles add warmth and a sense of comfort. The seating area draws inspiration from the meditative Japandi style, bringing the occupant closer to the ground. The fireplace, with its solid stone presence, anchors the otherwise light-filled space, providing a necessary sense of weight and balance.
The kitchen continues the same restrained aesthetic. White cabinetry, softly warm-toned wood, and discreet black accents create a timeless composition. Glass-fronted display cabinets add lightness and allow light to interact with surfaces.
Private spaces continue the same calm narrative. Bedrooms feature an even softer palette—beiges, greys, and subtle greenish hues create a delicate, almost mist-like atmosphere. Textiles play an essential role: layering, softness, and natural materials evoke a sense of slowed time. The bathroom feels like a tranquil home spa, where natural wood meets stone and glass. Sanitary fittings have been selected with a clean, contemporary aesthetic in mind. A wallpaper featuring botanical motifs catches the eye, further emphasising the home’s dialogue with nature.
Circulation spaces are not merely utilitarian. The entrance hall and corridor are designed with the same care as the main living areas, with practicality as the guiding principle, supported by built-in storage and thoughtfully planned lighting. Custom furniture features extensive use of oak veneer and light-painted MDF, creating a soft contrast with the pale softwood surfaces. The long corridor connecting the living room, kitchen and bedrooms is visually divided into zones – large oak-veneered panels are used on both walls and ceiling, and to maintain a unified appearance, some interior doors are also clad in oak veneer, allowing them to blend seamlessly into the panelled surfaces.
The greatest value of this home lies not in individual details, but in its harmonious, nature-inspired whole—simultaneously calm, functional, and timeless.
