PRIVATE HOUSE IN SAAREMAA
The two-story private house with a pitched roof was designed as a summer house, which could also be used as a year-round refuge, in order to escape the fast pace of daily life and relax.
Thus, the concept of a “relaxed lifestyle” was the central concept when designing this interior, so that the home could become a place to relax and simply enjoy a slower pace of life. Inspiration was drawn from the Japandi and wabi-sabi styles, which are focused on a connection with nature and a Zen mindset are central. Thus, the design for the space as simple and minimalistic as possible, with the emphasis being on the natural materials and unpretentious neutral tones.
Thus, it was decided to use a textured plaster throughout, both on the walls and on the sloping ceiling, thereby achieving a unique look. The aesthetic philosophy of wabi-sabi defines beauty through asymmetry. Although nothing in nature is perfect, it doesn’t have to be that way in the artificial environment around us. Therefore, in addition to factory-produced items, the interior also values crafts and unique items that add a slightly cozier and more human dimension to the otherwise crisp milieu.
Everything superfluous that could overload the interior with visual noise has been eliminated. The floors are covered with walnut-coloured plank parquet. The doors have no frames or hinges, and the handles are chosen to be as minimalist as possible. In the bathrooms, one finds light microcement, accented by walnut cabinetry and cast sinks with quartz countertops. Despite their large volumes, the lighting fixtures throughout the house have simple form and airy quality. The kitchen counters and facade of the oven are covered with quartzite that simulates travertine. Nothing attracts unnecessary attention to itself except for the beautiful harmony of clean form and minimalist details.
